About offering

The Child and Adolescent Health Nursing Major is designed to provide the theoretical foundations of nursing science, together with the clinical knowledge and skills associated with the student's specialty practice. A significant component of the major may be conducted in a health care institution. It focuses on the development of clinical leadership, promotion and integration of evidence-based nursing practice to foster the development of graduates consistent with the profile of the nurse specialist, offering the advanced-level nurse further clinical skills and an opportunity to extend career options.

Professional recognition

Eligible registered nurses may be able to use successful completion of this major as evidence for professional recognition, for example by the Western Australian Department of Health (Certificate Allowance). Graduates will be eligible to apply for the above positions. There is no accreditation for these positions.

  • community child health nurse
  • community school health nurse in primary and secondary schools
  • community adolescent health nurse in community agencies.

Graduates will be eligible to apply for a variety of professional positions in community child and adolescent health (child health, school health or general community health).

Admission criteria for Australian and New Zealand students

Applicants must hold a bachelor degree and Graduate Diploma in Child and Adolescent Health Nursing (Graduate Diploma with a course weighted average of 70) or equivalent and registration as a general nurse in Division One with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).

Other requirements and notes for this course

3 semesters full-time study or equivalent part-time study.

If not already undertaken at graduate certificate level: Students need to be able to undertake a compulsory five-day pre-clinical skills workshop at the Bentley campus prior to their clinical placement. There are no further fees incurred for this workshop but rural students will need to fund travel and accommodation expenses.
