About offering

This stream allows you to obtain a master-level qualification from Curtin and receive academic support while you prepare for the CPA Program’s external examinations.

The stream is suitable if you have graduated with an Australian bachelor degree or equivalent from a field other than accounting, and wish to pursue a career in professional accounting, or progress to senior or management roles.

What the course involves

This stream is designed to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of accounting, including the professional knowledge and standards required for industry membership and advancement.

The stream is part of the Professional Accounting major, which comprises 16 units which must be completed in two stages. On successful completion of the first eight units of that major, you can progress to the CPA Australia Extension stream and concurrently enrol in the professional level of the CPA Program with CPA Australia.

Why choose Curtin for this course?

We are the only Western Australian university to have CPA tuition provider status and the only WA university that offers you the opportunity to obtain a postgraduate qualification with tuition for the CPA Professional Program.

Similar courses are offered by universities in the eastern states, however the minimum duration of their courses is 2.5 years. Our course is only 2 years, which can be reduced to 1.5 years if 100 points of credit for recognised learning are granted.

Please note: upon completion of the CPA Australia-aligned units in the CPA Australia Extension Stream, you do not receive the CPA designation until you have met all the requirements of the CPA Program as set by CPA Australia. You must be enrolled in the CPA Program administered by CPA Australia and must also register for and sit the CPA Australia exams. You are responsible for all CPA Program fees including CPA Program segment exam fees.

In order to enrol in the CPA Program, it is your responsibility to ensure that you are qualified and able to meet the requirements for associate membership for CPA Australia.

Please refer to the handbook for additional course overview information.

Advanced standing / credit transfer / recognition of prior learning

At Curtin, we understand that everyone’s study journey has been different.

You may have already studied some of the units (subjects) listed in your Curtin course, or you may have work experience that matches the degree requirements.

If this applies to you, you can apply for credit for recognised learning (CRL), which means your previous study is recognised and matched against a similar unit in your intended Curtin course.

A successful CRL application exempts you from having to complete certain units within your course and means you could finish your degree in a shorter amount of time.

CRL is also known as recognition of prior learning, advanced standing and credit transfer.

Use the CRL search to find out how much CRL you qualify for, or contact us at:
