In this course, you will build on your knowledge of aquaculture (fish farming) and develop your skills using new advances in the area of sustainable aquaculture.

You will cover many areas, including principles and practices in sustainable aquaculture, aquatic environmental management, aquaculture nutrition, food security, aquaculture technology, value-addition of aquatic products and climate change.

You will be prepared for leadership roles within the resource management sector and have the practical skills and knowledge you need to manage the operations of aquaculture, marine and freshwater farms, and hatcheries.

A sustainable aquaculture research project is a significant component of this course. Intensive study periods may also be available over the summer or vacation periods.

  • The Curtin Aquatic Research Laboratories (CARL) has been specially designed and built to give students a modern facility in which to undertake their research and learning.
  • Within CARL is three main re-circulation systems: seawater, freshwater and inland saline water. The facility also contains an 80-tonne mesocosm tank with viewing windows, postgraduate research laboratories, ecotoxicology and teaching laboratories and a fully functional marine and freshwater hatchery as well as quarantine, live feed and algae culture rooms.
  • You will be exposed to various advanced equipment and modern technologies in the area of sustainable aquaculture and biotechnology.

Essential course prerequisites

You must have a bachelor degree in science, preferably biology, and/or have achieved competency in aquaculture or a related discipline to the level of second year tertiary study.

Other requirements and notes for this course

Those without a background in research methodology will be required to complete an additional research methodology unit. You may also be expected to complete appropriate bridging units in areas relevant to your research topic.
