About offering

Curtin offers a professional degree in interior architecture which will qualify you to practice as a professional interior designer or find work within a variety of design industries. Our interior architecture degree with embedded honours offers the highest undergraduate Australian qualification for the interior architecture and design industry. The robust course structure also facilitates students to diversify their own learning from a selection of electives and minors.

Striking a balance between creativity and practicality, this hands-on degree explores human experience as central to interior architecture through consideration of design psychology, functionality, the quality of the interior environment through lighting, ventilation and acoustics, the integration of furniture, in association with planning, spatial design, design development, construction documentation and contract administration. 

This course provides you with a solid foundation in the theoretical aspects of design, combined with a technical knowledge of interior construction, equipment and building systems, and the opportunity to experiment with your own ideas in design studios. Through several learning studios, you will develop knowledge of professional practice and communication, including computer, drawing and scientific skills.

Professionals working in interior architecture are able to offer passionate, creative, proactive and innovative solutions to exciting changes that are currently happening in airports, hospitals, schools, workplaces, retail properties, residential spaces and more, including the adaptive re-use of old buildings. 

Interior architecture involves a vast range of interiors of varying scales such as:

  • office, commercial and retail buildings
  • residential developments
  • complex interiors for health care environments
  • hospitality, entertainment, galleries and exhibition design
  • renovation and adaptive reuse projects
  • restoration and conservation of the interiors of historic buildings.

You will be required to complete a minimum of 80 hours' industry work experience in your own time, prior to the final year of your degree.

You will be given the option to go on an international study tour and regularly exhibit your work. You will also complete at least 80 hours' work experience in the industry before graduation.

Career information

Interior designers are employed within the broad field of interior architecture or where they can apply specific expertise such as health care, corporate design or heritage and conservation. This may occur as a sole practitioner or as part of a company of interior designers and/or architects. Graduates may also become specialists in areas including furniture design, lighting, event management, exhibition curation, interior magazine editing, academia, colour theory and universal design.

Applicants with recent secondary education are those whose admission is primarily based on the completion of Year 12 within the last two years, but also includes those who may have completed their senior secondary studies with a TAFE or other VET provider within the same time frame. This includes applicants whose secondary education was undertaken interstate or overseas.

Applicants with vocational education and training (VET) study are those whose highest level of study since leaving secondary education is a VET course. This includes study at a public TAFE or other VET provider, whether a qualification was completed or not. Applicants with VET study may have other qualifications such as a Year 10 or Year 12 secondary school certificate.

Applicants with work and life experience

Applicants with work and life experience are those who left secondary education more than two years ago (i.e. who are not classified as recent secondary education applicants) and have not undertaken vocational education training (VET) or higher education study since then.

‘Experience’ includes a combination of factors sufficient to demonstrate readiness for higher education such as mature-age entry, professional experience whether completion of the Special Tertiary Admission Test (STAT) is required or not, community involvement or work experience. Applicants may have undertaken non-formal programs that have helped prepare them for tertiary education or are relevant to the proposed higher education field of study.

What is a Commonwealth supported place (CSP)?

A CSP is subsidised by the Australian Government. They pay part of the course fees directly to Curtin and then the student pays the remainder (referred to as the “student contribution amount”). The student can defer this fee to their HECS-HELP loan.

All Australian students studying an undergraduate degree are automatically awarded a Commonwealth supported place. A limited number of Commonwealth supported places are also available for some postgraduate courses.
