The Bachelor of Education (Primary) provides a qualification for those who wish to teach children aged five to twelve years in the government, Catholic and independent school sectors.

This course aims to develop graduates who are noted for the quality of their preparation and dedication to the teaching profession, who can demonstrate a clear understanding of the integration of education theory and classroom practice, and are responsive to the changing cultural, social and individual needs of children in schools.

The course has a strong ICT, English and Mathematical focus with a student-centred approach to teaching and learning. The course is organised into three components:

Core education
Your core education units will comprise the bulk of the course and are taken throughout the four years. You will cover areas such as planning, implementing and evaluating learning experiences and programs; the curriculum learning areas; classroom management and teaching strategies; theories of learning; Indigenous education; and teaching children with diverse leaning needs. There is a strong emphasis on creating and nurturing an inquiry approach and analytic and critical thinking.

Electives
There are two main elective streams:

  • The Catholic education stream (3 units), which provides you with the background to apply for teaching positions in Catholic schools.
  • The Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) stream (3 units), which provides you with the background and skills to teach students from Non-English Speaking Backgrounds (NESB).

You may choose electives from between these two streams or from other electives offered. You can also choose elective units from across the University, for example, psychology speech and hearing or indigenous education.

Teaching practice
School experience forms a significant part of the degree. You will work in schools in various capacities and for varying lengths of time throughout the program, culminating a final term-long internship (usually 10 weeks). During the internship, you will have the major responsibility for a class, under the supervision of a mentor teacher. There are often opportunities for a country practice or an interstate or international internship.

You will complete four professional experience placements in this course. These placements provide opportunities to practice and demonstrate the skills and knowledge gained under the supervision of a mentor teacher. There may be opportunities for a country, interstate or overseas placement.

The final professional experience placement is referred to as the Internship and is conducted over one school term in a full time block mode. The Internship is undertaken in a school setting. There may be opportunities for a 'country' practice or an interstate Internship placement.

How this course will make you industry ready

This course comprises units on teaching strategies, planning lessons, classroom management, learning processes, educational psychology and curriculum studies. You will also complete 20 weeks of teaching practice over the course of your studies, including a 10 week internship where you will have the major responsibility for a class of children under the mentorship of a qualified teacher.

Applicants with recent secondary education are those whose admission is primarily based on the completion of Year 12 within the last two years, but also includes those who may have completed their senior secondary studies with a TAFE or other VET provider within the same time frame. Applicants with vocational education and training (VET) study

Applicants with vocational education and training (VET) study are those whose highest level of study since leaving secondary education is a VET course. This includes study at a public TAFE or other VET provider, whether a qualification was completed or not. Applicants with VET study may have other qualifications such as a Year 10 or Year 12 secondary school certificate.

Applicants with work and life experience

Applicants with work and life experience are those who left secondary education more than two years ago (i.e. who are not classified as recent secondary education applicants) and have not undertaken vocational education training (VET) or higher education study since then.

‘Experience’ includes a combination of factors sufficient to demonstrate readiness for higher education such as mature-age entry, professional experience whether completion of the Special Tertiary Admission Test (STAT) is required or not, community involvement or work experience. Applicants may have undertaken non-formal programs that have helped prepare them for tertiary education or are relevant to the proposed higher education field of study.

You will be required to pass a literacy and numeracy competency test in the first year of the degree. These tests comprise of spelling, essay writing, and knowledge of mathematics content appropriate to primary aged children.

What is a Commonwealth supported place (CSP)?

A CSP is subsidised by the Australian Government. They pay part of the course fees directly to Curtin and then the student pays the remainder (referred to as the “student contribution amount”). The student can defer this fee to their HECS-HELP loan.

All Australian students studying an undergraduate degree are automatically awarded a Commonwealth supported place. A limited number of Commonwealth supported places are also available for some postgraduate courses.
