Outline

This course develops originality and independence of thought and trains students in research. It is a path for students proceeding to a higher degree. Additionally, this course broadens knowledge and provides exposure to the latest developments in health related research, thereby enhancing employment prospects.

The BSc (Health Sciences) (Honours) program enables students to build on the knowledge obtained in their undergraduate degree and focus on one of the following areas of study: health promotion, food science, nutrition, health safety and environment, epidemiology, exercise physiology, biomechanics, strength and conditioning, motor control and learning.

As well as studying units in a chosen discipline, students will examine academic research methodology and enhance their analytical skills. Students will also complete a supervised research project and present findings as an honours dissertation.

  • apply discipline specific knowledge, principles and concepts in the conduct of independent research
  • demonstrate knowledge of discipline specific research methodologies and how they are applied to answer research questions
  • critically analyse relevant literature in a specific discipline to design and implement a research project
  • maintain accurate records of project planning, process and progress
  • communicate about the research process and research outcomes through a proposal, dissertation and oral presentation
  • relate the significance of field of research and research question to discipline specific context
  • apply appropriate ethical procedures for undertaking research and take into account cultural context where relevant
  • exhibit increasing autonomy in the conduct of research
  • use established and emerging technologies and apply them in the context of a specific discipline

You’re considered someone with work and life experience if:

You have left secondary education more than two years ago (i.e. who are not classified as recent secondary education applicants) and have not undertaken vocational education training (VET) or higher education study since then.

How we define ‘experience’
‘Experience’ includes a combination of factors sufficient to demonstrate readiness for higher education such as mature-age entry, professional experience whether completion of the Special Tertiary Admission Test (STAT) is required or not, community involvement or work experience. Applicants may have undertaken non-formal programs that have helped prepare them for tertiary education or are relevant to the proposed higher education field of study.

Applicants with vocational education and training (VET) study are those whose highest level of study since leaving secondary education is a VET course. This includes study at a public TAFE or other VET provider, whether a qualification was completed or not. Applicants with VET study may have other qualifications such as a Year 10 or Year 12 secondary school certificate.
