About offering

Students taking this major can specialise in either Electrical Power Engineering, or Electronic Engineering. There is hardly any aspect of modern civilisation that is not dependent upon electrical energy. It is used for heating, cooling, lighting, transportation, manufacturing and production, minerals processing, to name just a few areas of application. Electrical power engineering considers these applications of electrical energy, together with its generation, transmission and distribution, as well as the harnessing of sources of renewable and sustainable energy.

Electronic engineering is one of the fastest growing technology areas internationally, and job opportunities in this field abound. With the rapid progress of the information society, the role of electronic communication and embedded systems (Internet of Things or IoT) is becoming even more crucial to increased industry efficiency and competitiveness. The reason lies in the decentralisation of computing power in both the office and factory environment and the ability of specialised communication networks to link all geographically and spatially separated elements. In this specialisation students will learn about the theoretical and practical aspects of modern digital, electronic and communication systems.

More recently, the fields of electrical engineering and electronic engineering are starting to converge as society seeks more efficient, safe, reliable, and environmentally friendly solutions to engineering problems. For example, smart grids use electronic and computer technologies to achieve better management of electricity consumption and safety in commercial and domestic environments. This Major will allow students to gain expertise in both the electrical and electronic engineering fields.

In the first year, students will complete the Engineering Foundation Year (EFY). The EFY builds a solid base of the fundamental concepts common to all areas of engineering and was developed in partnership with industry to create a curriculum that is reflective of engineering practice. The second year is common to all electrical and electronic engineering with specialisation units included in the final two years of the program. In the final year of study, students will undertake a major research or design project. 

To satisfy professional requirements, students must complete at least 12 weeks or equivalent of exposure to professional engineering practice. This requirement can be met by appropriate work experience or through a combination of technical and non-technical activities. Students must demonstrate that they have met these requirements by using a formal Log Book to record their professional experiences during the period of their degree study.

Students are strongly encouraged to secure industry placements (assisted by a WIL officer) that can form part of their Exposure to Professional Engineering Practice requirement.

How this course will make you industry ready

The course receives inputs from an Industry Advisory Board to ensure the course matches current industry needs and expectations. In the final year, students undertake a 2-semester research and design capstone project to demonstrate their abilities. Students are also required to complete 480 hours of exposure to professional engineering practice to prepare them for the workplace.

Curtin course switcher criteria

To switch into this course, you need to have:

  • attained an ATAR of 80 and completed the prerequisites; or
  • if you have studied Maths Applications or equivalent:
    • completed 75 credits within one semester with a semester weighted average (SWA) of at least 70%; or
    • completed 100 credits within one semester with SWA of 65% or higher, plus any unit/s assessed as comparable to Maths Methods ATAR and Physics ATAR and Chemistry ATAR; or
  • if you have studied Maths Methods or equivalent:
    • completed 75 credits within one semester with an SWA of 65%; or
    • completed 100 credits within one semester with an SWA of 60% or higher, plus any unit/s assessed as comparable to Maths Methods ATAR, and Physics ATAR or Chemistry ATAR.

The Maths Methods prerequisite can be met with:

  • Maths Methods ATAR; or
  • MATH1013 Introductory Mathematics or MATH1005 Pre-Calculus (12.5 credits); and
  • MATH1014 Foundations of Calculus.

The Physics ATAR prerequisite can be met with:

Applicants with work and life experience are those who left secondary education more than two years ago (i.e. who are not classified as recent secondary education applicants) and have not undertaken vocational education training (VET) or higher education study since then.

‘Experience’ includes a combination of factors sufficient to demonstrate readiness for higher education such as mature-age entry, professional experience whether completion of the Special Tertiary Admission Test (STAT) is required or not, community involvement or work experience. Applicants may have undertaken non-formal programs that have helped prepare them for tertiary education or are relevant to the proposed higher education field of study.
